    Default Playoff Pools

First of all, thanks to everyone who has been apart of these forums this season - I finished 1st, 1st, 2nd and 5th and a huge part of that is all of the help from everyone, so thanks!

I am in a playoff pool at a customers tomorrow night:

20 people in the pool, 7 skaters and 1 goalie.
3 points for a goalie win, 1 point for points
Last pick gets 1st Goalie pick in the final round.

I have come to the conclusion that picking the right Goalie will guarantee you have a very very good shot at winning this pool. Assuming Chicago wins the cup and Crawford plays every game, thats 48 points just from Crawford. If Chicago went to game 7 every single time, they could play 28 games total - what are the chances of Kaner or Toews putting up 48 points in 28 games?

I have been contemplating trading whatever pick I get with whoever has the 20th pick. I could go with Fleury, Crawford, Rask etc. Based solely on points over the season and assuming the guys in this pool arent picking only from good teams I figure the 20th overall pick could be someone who put up 35-40 points this season.

Thoughts on trying to get the 1st goalie pick?
Also, who do you think goes far? I believe pittsburgh and chicago are favorites for good reason and although having the #1 seeds meet in the finals hasnt happened for a very long time, I feel like these two teams could do it. I like Anaheim, LA and Boston too!

For wins how would you rank playoff goalies? Would you take Fleury over Crawford due to Emery potentially starting a game or two?

I have never done this before so here are my thoughts, would appreciate some feedback!

I am going to do everything in my power to get the 20th pick, I will pay someone to switch with me if I have to.

Assuming the first 19 guys pick solely on points and dont skip over potential first round knockouts like Tavares, Moulson, Kessel, Parise etc - These guys will be available.

Pacioretty, Parise, Subban, Letang, Dupuis, Koivu, Couture, Perry, Marchand, Neal

I would go with two of Dupuis/Neal/Letang and hope for some huge Pittsburgh chemistry if those guys are still available, Assuming every Pittsburgh player doesnt get drafted before higher ranked players on lower ranked teams.

Assuming everyone once again drafts purely based on points and again doesnt skip over potential first round knockouts like Boyes, Suter, Pominville, JVR - these guys could be my 41st and 42nd picks:

Iginla, Brouwer, Bergeron, Seguin, Richards, Riemsdyk, Hossa, Franzen, Saad

    I would 100% go with either Bergeron/Seguin/Hossa/Saad.
After getting 4-5 players from teams I believe will make it to the conference finals I will probably draft the remaining players with the highest points or ppg totals in the season.

Now on to goalies, I am thinking about going with Fleury even though I have more confidence in Chicago - we only get ONE goalie and with Emery and Crow both being absolutely stellar this season - maybe getting 24 points from fleury (8 wins) is better?

    Thoughts? Will rep!

I think you are making some huge assumptions about what other people are going to do... playoff fantasy pools in particular are extremely unpredictable.

Prioritize your teams, have 4-5 in mind that will make it to the final four, and be prepared to change directions along way as the draft unfolds.

The honest truth is that playoff pools are a lot more luck than skill.

Oh for sure, I have never been in a playoff pool.
The only thing I was looking for some experienced advice on was whether or not 20th overall pick with the 1st goalie pick is better than 1st overall pick with the 20th goalie pick is better or not?

I cant see any reason how a goalie that wins isnt a huge asset but ive never done this before lol!

Ahhh I understand your question now.

Picking the goalie is a crapshoot... even if you pick Fleury or Crawford (the 2 favourites) there's no guarantee they will get all the starts since they have capable backups.

I wouldn't trade down so far just to pick the first goalie if I were you... your roster depth will take a huge hit.

    Strategy Building:

    1st: GOALIES
I do agree that the best spot in this draft is the end numbers. 16,17,18,19,20.
I'd want a first goalie pick.

Do one thing for absolute sure:
MAKE YOUR FULL GOALIE DRAFT SHEET IN ADVANCE.

    It won't take long.

Start by looking at the #4 and #5 seeds in each conference.
    (Trust me, this is easiest).

Rank them as you see fit:

    *Rask (BOS)
    *Quick (LA)
    *Elliot (STL)
    *Reimer (TOR)

Then, move to the #3 to #6 match-ups and add those in.

    *Rask (BOS)
*Lundqvist (NYR - this is just an example, my example)
    *Schneider (VAN)
    *Niemi (SJ)
    *Quick (LA)
    *Elliot (STL)
    *Holtby (WAS)
    *Reimer (TOR)

Then move on to #2 vs. #7.
Then finish with the #1 vs. #8 teams.

    DO YOUR GOALIE LIST FIRST.

Having a goalie list will allow you to get your draft number and have a good idea which goalie you can get after the skaters.

You want to supplement your likely goalie pick with one or two skaters.
In a 20-team league, Goalie+1 or 2 skaters gives you a guaranteed WIN if that team wins the Stanley Cup.

If you can corner the market on 2/16 teams... that's an UBER success.
I would not aim for more than cornering two teams in a 20-team pool.

    2nd: SKATERS
The first 20 skater picks will likely be (in order of team Cup likelihood):

PIT (4): Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Letang
    CHI (3): Toews, P.Kane, Hossa
    ANA (2): Getzlaf, Perry
    BOS (1): Seguin
    WAS (2): Ovechkin, N.Backstrom
    VAN (2): D.Sedin, H.Sedin
    NYR (1): Nash

    That's only 15.
So don't think Neal and/or Letang will be there at the end of a round.
    Big mistake.

    In a 20-team league, here's my strategy:

1st or 2nd pick: Crosby/Malkin. There is a slight advantage to the #2 pick... because on the return snake, the #2 pick will grab his guy first and MUST take another PIT skater to allow himself to "corner the market" on PIT.

3rd-10th picks: You are looking at getting the BEST player on a team that could win the cup. If you do NOT get the BEST player on a team (say you draft N.Backstrom) then you MUST take the same teammate on the way back to be stronger. i.e. Take Mike Ribeiro... since a WAS cup run of N.Backstrom+Ribeiro probably outscores Ovechkin.

11th-20th picks: By pick #11 the top contenders' top players (CHI, ANA, PIT, BOS) are probably off the board. It might be worthwhile to pick a best player on a lesser contender to try to corner the market on TWO teams... so possibly take Kopitar (LA) and Thornton (SJ).

With 20 teams, you have to finish the first two rounds with a BEST TEAM.
In other words, say you draft Crosby (1) and Pietrangelo (40).
I'd say that's a fail if another team gets Neal (8) and Iginla (33).
Team Crosby probably doesn't beat Team Neal/Iginla.

There are only 16 NHL playoff teams.
Corner the market on one... possibly two.

    SUMMARY:
You have to pick your teams and run with them.
You won't win with a share of several teams.

    Unbelievable post, thank you!
I am definitely hoping for a late draft spot.

So essentially my goal is to succesfully draft at least 2 of my 7 players from a team I believe will go far and if I can somehow get that goalie as well, I have a great shot assuming they win the cup. And the way to do this, based on my draft position is to figure out which goalie I am likely to get based on where I draft in the goalie round.

Assuming I am in the top 4 picks and all of the starting goalies are drafted, how would you rank backup goalies?

Tier 1? Emery/Fasth/Halak/Luongo (These guys may be overlooked but could potentially jump in if something goes south with the other goalie)
    Tier 2? Fleury/Khudobin/Budaj/Neuvirth?
Tier 3: All other backups from potential cup contenders? Greiss/Bernier?

So the draft got completely changed once we all got there.
Went down to 12 teams and goalies get no credits for wins, just shutouts.
So 1 point for goals/assists and 3 points for a shutout.

I am team 9, anyone care to weigh in on the teams?

Great job. Personally I think your team is the front-runner. If Chicago and the Pens make it to the conference finals you will probably win.

The other teams are spread too thin.

Wow that's really stupid no points for wins just shutouts? Makes goalies go from most important to least important IMO. (I know you didn't write the rules) a great adjustment in my opinion to assumingly take Holtby late.

Seems like a good execution of the strategy of cornerning 2 teams (Hawks & Pens) and the fact that they are the two favourites, and from different conferences makes it all the better. With a Hawks/Pens final I think you're in the money. The Voynov pick seems out of left field but was most likely your last pick (and maybe their was a D-man requirement). Overall great team.

    It's an OK draft.

Personally - I'm not sure you can win this pool.
You will need a CHI vs. PIT final... and even then, you might get beat by team 12 (Toews/Crawford/Dupuis).
You've also got a shot in a CHI vs. WAS final... but again, it's a battle with team 12 (Toews/Ribeiro/Brouwer).

Here's how I'd break down this pool:
If MON goes to cup: Team 1 wins pool.
If VAN goes cup: Team 2 wins pool.
Team 3 will not win pool unless it is STL vs. MON final.
If NYR goes to cup: Team 4 wins pool.
Team 5 will not win pool unless it is PIT/BOS conference final.
If ANA goes to cup: Team 6 wins pool. Also has chance if ANA & PIT make final four.
If PIT goes to cup: Team 6 front-runner to win pool.
If DET goes to cup: Team 7 wins pool.
If BOS goes to cup: Team 8 wins pool.
If CHI goes to cup: Team 9 has 50/50 shot at pool.
If WAS goes to cup: Team 9 has 50/50 shot at pool.
If LA or TOR goes to cup: Team 10 wins pool.
If SJ or STL goes to cup: Team 11 wins pool.
If CHI goes to cup: Team 12 has 50/50 shot at pool.
If WAS goes to cup: Team 12 has 50/50 shot at pool.

PIT players are very spread out.
This gives team 1 (Crosby), team 2 (Malkin), and team 6 (Neal/Fleury) the odds to win a run if PIT goes far.

In summary... I think you've got a 50/50 shot to win the pool IF Chicago or Washington goes to the cup.

    Who is "Legein"?
    Team 10.

I am glad I got Kane/Sharp/Hossa right off the bat.

Bergeron seemed like one of the better players available if Boston can make it to the conference finals with Pittsburgh and I had hoped to grab some more Boston players to help corner a second team. I started looking through all my sheets and realized that one team already had half the friggin bruins and didnt think the one team with Penguins was too much of an issue so grabbed Morrow and Jokinen. Paul Martin/Keith/Seabrook were my next choices and they all got taken so I scrambled and took Voynov.

The shutouts were a crapshoot so I am banking on a couple of New York Rangers meltdowns and Mike Green domination for a Holtby shutout!

Legein was entered wrong, should be Richards - not sure how they managed that!

I am currently in 3rd place.

1st place: iginla, letang, s. koivu, horton, backstrom, alfy, cleary, rask
if the teams in the lead win their series, team 1 is looking good in the future.

2nd place: thornton, couture, pavelski, backes, stewart, datsyuk, stepan, niemi
SJ most productive line is lighting it up (9pts last night)

me: kane, hossa, sharp, morrow, jokinen, bergeron, voynov, holtby
(I am actually so disappointed in my voynov pick lol )
friggin voynov, pittsburgh picks are sucking, shoulda gone 100% chicago

4th: getz, neal, lucic, selanne, stalberg, cogliano, doughty, fleury

I'd still say you're the front runner at this point... it's good that the Wild won yesterday, gives you a chance to milk some more points out of that series.

    That chicago trio is lethal!
