    Default Tim Thomas: Reminder

Yeah... it's a small chance... but there is an outside chance he could sign & play somewhere next season.

For those in deep keeper leagues where goalies are critical, you may want to roster Thomas as a potential "keeper" if he signs in the off-season.

If your season is over, might as well have Tim Thomas on your roster instead of a guy like Dan Cleary or Anton Stralman.

Unless the Islanders want to dock his contract into next year so they can inflate their cap number for one more year until Thomas officially retires.

That's how they held Nabakov. They will probably toll his contract.

    Isn't Thomas a UFA on July 1st?
    Couldn't he sign with anybody?

He refused to report. It wasn't as if it was an amicable situation when he did that. It was mentioned by several writers that the Islanders could toll the contract because he hasn't reported to them either.

I actually don't really understand what that means...

Does it mean they could extend his actual contract into next year because he still owes them for a time period of work?

Basically, but wasn't the premise of the trade just so they could reach the cap floor and they probably had some unwritten agreement to not toll his contract.

What would they gain from such an agreement? I never heard any such speculation when the trade happened.

This could actually work out to be Charles Wang's wet dream: he has TT under contract for a year. TT doesn't report. The Isles suspend Thomas, but the contract still counts against the cap. Because TT didn't report, NYI tolls the contract, which leaves TT under contract for another year. TT doesn't report. Lather, rinse, repeat -- $5M of cap space eaten up in perpetuity with no salary paid.

This article sums it up nicely from when the trade happened.

I'm sure the Commissioner's office would be pissed about this if they toll in perpetuity.
