In my main league my team is the Blackhawks. I used the 1974 Topps set for design inspiration. I know I'm a big, fat nerd, oh wellz!! Wanted to share with you guys

Jerseydatabase seems to have run its course on the hockey side so I think there are many who are looking for alternatives. I doubt you have this done on a large scale but this is a really cool idea.

    Photoshop.

Made the template from scratch - fairly easy.

Found high-res photos on Google Images.

Cropped the backgrounds out of the images with Lasso Tool in Photoshop (took the longest).

Created a blue gradient background (often used in retro hockey cards as photo backdrops).

Fun fact: I worked on GEGL which is one of the processing engines for GIMP as part of a Google Summer of Code project. They were nice enough to put everyone's name as contributors on their main page (http://www.gegl.org/).

Awesome job man, they look bad ass.

On a semi-related note, I haven't played with any photo-editing software since Photoshop CS2, but I was using PowerPoint for work recently and discovered that the photo-editing (for basic/intermediate applications) was really impressive. Of particular note is the "Remove Background" tool which is extremely user friendly and quite effective. Just a thought that you might want to actually give it a try fungchen since you said that took the longest
