Default Best Defensive D Men in NHL?

I am in a new league which is heavy in defensive cats. I have looked at the past champ, and he seems to be a master of stocking up on the players that put up huge points in this league, but tend to fly under the radar because they don't put up the offensive numbers. I am looking at targeting some of these players for trades. Taking things like hits, blocks, total ice time, PK ice time, +/-, but not worrying about goals or assists, who do you think are the players that I should target? I am thinking players like Girardi, McDonagh, Smid, etc.

Hits and blocked shots aren't great measures of true defensive talent (ideally you want defensemen "with" the puck so they don't have to hit or block), but it is the best measure we have for fantasy hockey.

I'd look at past production, as it is very indicative of future production in these two categories. Very rarely will a guy suddenly develop into a hitter or shot blocker. You either are or aren't (for the most part).

Brooks Orpik has done well for me. +/-, hits and blocks. I think the other day he went off with a 5 hits/5 blocks night.

Mark stuart is a stud in hits and blocks. Not so much +/-.

Mark Fraser is good in +/- along with hits (not sure about blocked shots)

Something you'll want to take into consideration this summer as teams pick up players is how certain arenas score hits differently so players on certain teams gain a huge home ice advantage. Some numbers to consider here:

Players signing in some favourable locations should be good bets to build on their previous production while players leaving favourable locations may drop off.

I've been trying to build my D into a fairly balanced unit. At the deadline I added Luke Schenn and Beauchemin and I'm quite happy with both of them. Brent Seabrook is another guy that's always been a very solid multicategory guy and earlier in the year I picked up Brenden Dillon as a free agent. He's not tops, but he still gets very nice peripherals and I think they will go higher next year. Just a few thoughts based on my own team...

I think a good staple for me has been Robidas as well. He's consistently a high producer of BLKS and HITS

Carlson is huge in blocked shots and he scores. So I'd go after him at least.

Don't you mean huge in blocked shots? He doesn't get a lot of hits at all.
