One of these guys is 'Mr. Clutch' and a Conn Smyth winner and the other needs to 'bring it' in future post-seasons before we can call him a great player.

For the record, I am a big Toews fan and love his play. I know there is more to hockey than points, but I don't think Ovi deserves all the crap he gets.
(except maybe the late/dangerous hit stuff... but then Malkin deserves that more than he gets, maybe all russians look alike or something?)
Great use of stats, Loch. I love it when we can use stats to show how our perception is often quite skewed from reality.

he was slumping for 2.5 years.

and to say "the Caps were terrible to start the year and that had an effect on the star" is wrong. He's the reason they were terrible. He's their captain and best player. The terrible start was on his shoulders.

I love this tear he is on. I drafted him with my first pick, last of the first round 11th overall. Was shocked he lasted that long. Our pool is very basic just gaols and assists, but we get bonus points for hat tricks, PPG, GWG so as of today he is the #1 point getter in our pool. Just ahead of Chris Kunitz - who knew....

Yeah it's fun to see. I'm hoping they get on a run here, squeeze into the playoffs and then surprise a few teams.

Ovechkin is pretty polarizing but he's exactly what the NHL needs when he's on his game. I'm hoping it lasts.

I don't think this will last, but its definitely nice to see after his mediocre performances the past few years.

Yep, he's definitely silencing the haters and naysayers who said he was done for at the start of the season. Looks like the owners who bought him low are reaping the rewards.

Its not the ability, but the consistent effort just isn't where it used to be. I will never doubt his abilities, but if he continues to play the way he's been playing lately he will definitely do some good things.

Effort and also Backstrom. As good as Ovi can be, he can't do it without a center and Backstrom was stinking it up as much Ovi was. Oates did a great job turning both of them around.

Tied for 2nd in goals, 7th in points and leading the league in SOG, has Ovechkin decided he wants to be relevant again? Has Adam Oates figured it out? Basically, all I'm asking is what has changed? His stats become even more impressive if you take away his slow start. In his last 22 games, he has scored 18 goals and 31 points. Pro-rate that to 82 games and it's 67 goals and 116 points! Obviously, that pace is probably not sustainable, but those numbers are downright Ovechkian! So, Caps fans, armchair hockey analysts, what has changed? Does he just care again?

The Ovechkin-is-finished sentiments have been very popular discussion here on the Dobber boards over the past couple years.

I'll be honest, I chalked him up for being down a few pegs and not coming back. He definitely appears back... but let's take some notes:

    1. Ovechkin has 43pts: 25G, 18A. This breaks down like this:
    ESP: 22pts: 11G, 11A. [*Consider Andrew Ladd has 30 even-strenght points]
    PPP: 21pts: 14G, 7A.
When I look at players, the VERY FIRST THING I look at is Even-Strength-Points.
ESP is, IMO, the greatest indicator towards predicting a player's output.
Even-strength points are important because PPP can go up-and-down a lot from year-to-year.

    2. Ovechkin has been a complete tear over his past 20 or so games. He has been absolutely FEASTING on the bad teams.
His multi-point games over the last few months:
3/7 vs FLA: 3pts (No decent goalie, bad defense)
3/14 vs CAR: 2pts (No Cam Ward, bad defense)
    3/21 vs WPG: 2pts
    3/22 vs WPG: 2pts
    3/24 vs NYR: 2pts
    4/2 vs CAR: 3pts
4/6 vs FLA: 4pts (crap goalie, bad defense)
4/7 vs TB: 2pts (crap defense)

    Ah... the Southeastern Conference.
Q: Do you know what doesn't exist near year?
A: The southeastern conference. WAS will play with NYR/NYI/PHI/PIT/NJ/CAR (incl. Cam Ward).

    3. Typically, when we try to look at a player positively, we go back and count a number of games where production looks good.
22 games, quite the choice of games back, eh?
Oh - I'm just giving you a hard time. I do it too sometimes.
But we should be realistic about what he can maintain over a full season.

    My summary:
I had pegged Ovechkin down to a 75pt player in the offseason.
He looks good enough to me to peg him now as a 80-82pt player again. But I really don't think he's much above that.
The PPP is what's driving his numbers... and as NHL teams prepare for teams, they'll start focusing on overcommitting to him on the PP.
If it was the ESP that was high, I'd be more on board.

80-82pts though, is still good enough, IMO... to peg Ovechkin as the 6th best skater in fantasy hockey (I'd still take Crosby/Stamkos/Malkin/Tavares/Giroux... in that order... ahead of Ovechkin).

Wait, you'd take GIROUX over Ovechkin? Let's give you the benefit of the doubt and say you were just talking about points-only leagues.

Ovechkin has more points, more goals, more PPP

If you factor in positional advantage (LW vs C) - it's no contest.

    I'm baffled.

I traded for Ovechkin in a limited keeper salary cap roto league last season and I drafted him 10th overall in a new dynasty salary cap league, so yeah, I'm relieved more than pumped as he has at least partially vindicated my faith in him.
