Default So... Ovie is like, back and stuff, right?

I haven't watched any Washington games, but just looking at the numbers, it would appear that Alexander is indeed great again. Tied for 2nd in goals, 7th in points and leading the league in SOG, has Ovechkin decided he wants to be relevant again? Has Adam Oates figured it out? Basically, all I'm asking is what has changed? His stats become even more impressive if you take away his slow start. In his last 22 games, he has scored 18 goals and 31 points. Pro-rate that to 82 games and it's 67 goals and 116 points! Obviously, that pace is probably not sustainable, but those numbers are downright Ovechkian! So, Caps fans, armchair hockey analysts, what has changed? Does he just care again?

The whole Caps team has looked fantastic the last month or so.....Ovi seems to have his mojo back along with the fire/hunger. He's less predictable, and is scoring/gettingpoints in all sorts of ways. He's using his line-mates much more again, and the move to the other wing has paid off after the original learning curve. He's is physically engaged out there, and re-established his sick chemistry with Backstrom......they look like they can score at will on the power play right now, it's scary.

Regardless, I see a big improvement in Ovi's attitude and body language, and it's translated to his (and the Cap's) play on the ice.

I'm thinking Oates might be the cause of this improvement... the whole team has got better in the second half of the season.

I think if they'd had a training camp it might have taken less time, but the fact they started with 15pts in the first 19 games and then had 25pts in the next 19 games suggests a team that is on the uptick.

Nice to see Ovi being Ovi-ish for a change though.

^^^ Agree with this. The team has taken a bit of time to acclimatize to Oates' principles, but his offensive approach is now paying dividends as the entire team has started to flourish under his the last month. I agree that with a proper training camp, we likley would not have seen such an extended and awful start. I for one, am looking for a big year for the Caps in an 82 games season next year.

As much as I loathe Green, gotta admit it's nice to see flashes of the old GR8 again. He was always my favourite player back in his prime. Hopefully he's doing it cleanly.

Nothing Ovie does in the regular season matters anymore, imo. Even if he scored another 65 goals people would still say he is shit when it matters in the playoffs. He definitely needs to win a cup to solidify himself as an all-time great or people will always just think 'Lazy Russian'.

If anything it has been the exact opposite (except for last year, he seemed pretty unmotivated last year) of lazy Russian. His problem was that he tried too hard to win the cup all by himself, in the earlier years he needed to learn to play more of a team game in the playoffs, hopefully he has learned that now.

Things like the play-off performance always amuse me...

    Toews Post-Season
    52gp 50pts

    Ovi Post-Season
    51gp 59pts

One of these guys is 'Mr. Clutch' and a Conn Smyth winner and the other needs to 'bring it' in future post-seasons before we can call him a great player.

For the record, I am a big Toews fan and love his play. I know there is more to hockey than points, but I don't think Ovi deserves all the crap he gets.
(except maybe the late/dangerous hit stuff... but then Malkin deserves that more than he gets, maybe all russians look alike or something?)
