Calgary... the most mismanaged team outside of the NYI and CBJ. At least the Islanders draft properly.
He will not have a problem walking in the dressing room because he makes them a better team. Hockey is a business about winning.

no doubt it is all about money. good for ROR and his family for getting a $10M payday.

however, as we've seen via the brouwer/semin and other situations, your teammates still think you're a douche. if he doesn't care that's fine, but he'll never get the "C" put on his chest.

I think at this point he'll just play his years and become a UFA. Maybe by then they like each other more and sign long-term. But NHL dressing rooms are like any other workplace. You might not get along with everyone but work can still get done.

The following year you're right, they're getting screwed and this O'Reilly deal will hurt more then because he won't resign for a much lower number and Lando and Duchene's agents are going to point at the deal for the money their clients should be getting as a minimum. I guess Stastny might come down a bit, but they should start planning ahead.
Aves are obligated to keep him only the first year of the contract correct? They can move him at any point after, no?

    That was my understanding.

Could an NHL GM actually overlook this kind of detail?!

Apparently, they could have lost their picks and lost O'Reilly had the Avs not matched!!!

Yet another reason why that waiver rule is absolutely stupid.

That got waived for the shortened season... it would have never played out like that.

Yet another reason why Ownership and Management in Calgary is a joke. Let's trade away a top 10 pick cause we're going to intentially screw it up at the draft anyways.

The only issue is that acquiring him doesn't necessarily make Calgary a contender but really this team probably isn't dropping into the bottom three after acquiring him so really getting him is as good if not better than having a shot at a top three pick in this draft. You know what you are getting with O'Reilly better than any top pick even if the history of success with those guys is pretty damn high.

O'Reilly's contract also isn't so much more expensive than what you'd pay a top three pick anyway and if I'm not mistaken he'll remain an RFA at the end of this deal so Calgary will continue to hold onto his rights, which makes him nearly as valuable as a guy on a rookie deal.

Finally, if Colorado matches then at least you've saddled your division rival with a player who has conflict there and you've forced them to pay more than they wanted to keep him.

I say good deal and I'm with Comish on this one, I wish the Oilers had the sack to try the same deal. Imagine O'Reilly on that team!
Best post in this thread so far. Completely agree with everything you've said. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and this is the kind of thing they have to do if they are going to fix their center problem. They probably can't rely on a draft pick to bring in that center they need if they are going to try for the playoffs every year anyway.

He would not have had to been put on waivers to clear. That was under the old CBA. The new CBA has it that RFA's do not have to clear through waivers.

For those asking, yes, my understanding is if COL hadn't matched CGY offer on O'Reilly, CGY would have had to put him on waivers to play now

    Per Bob McKenzie.

So we have conflicting reports about this but does the NHL have an answer to this or is this a classic blunder?

According to TSN, Bill Daly has confirmed that O'Reilly was subject to waivers if COL didn't match the offer sheet.

Well that explains the Calgary Flames!

Seriously though, this can't be true. Not one member of managment knew this? I doubt that.

I don't. They still believe they can be contenders. Slowing turning into the Leafs of this decade.
