Well, if that's not a jinx I don't know what is.

"Oh you think that isn't bad?" Asked God, "I'll show you bad!"

Well fellas, I ended up parking Varlamov's butt on my bench tonight...and whaddya know he goes and gives up 3 goals with a subpar save percentage (even though I thought he played decently overall).

You guys brought up some fantastic points, thank you all! I'm not gonna lie though, I put him on the bench after reading some of your responses, and then started playing Halo thinking I'd keep thinking about it. Time passed by quickly and I looked at the clock and realized it was already 10:15 EST and it was too late to change even if I wanted to.

Phew. Knowing me I would have put him in.

Unless Varlamov gets a shutout or gives up 1 goal against the typically high scoring Canucks, he would have lost in 2 cats, while potentiall only gaining in 1W.

Avs can't score, so getting a W was unlikely,

After some midnight research I've come to the conclusion that Varlamov should be spot started only in home games. He's 30-17-8 with 2.08 GAA in his career at home and something like 28-24-7 with a 2.89 GAA on the road. Seems pretty drastic to me. Plus with the whole "Mile High" effect in Denver, I can see Colorado enjoying a nice home ice advantage. Could require a bit more research though.

    OK, really?
No starts for Varlamov on the road, huh.

How about a few from March of last year:
W, 1 goal against on 3/30/2012 in Calgary.
L, 1 goal against on 3/28/2012 in Vancouver.
W, 1 goal against on 3/17/2012 in MSG vs NYR.
W, shutout on 3/4/2012 in Minnesota.
W, shutout on 2/24/2012 in Columbus.
    ...
    Should I keep finding games?

It's true that he was a bit rocky to start last season on the road (except a shutout vs. Boston in Game 2).
And it will be true that it will be much tougher for Colorado to win games with Landeskog out of the line-up.

But generic comments about not starting a goalie on the road???
    Really???
Meh. That's rookie thinking there. Thumbs down.

Yes, and the one time I got a chick off is proof of my great abilities as a lover... even a blind squirrel finds a nut.

Home/road splits are a perfectly valid way to help you decide what to do about starting your goalies but you know, you're right, statements that include things like "midnight research" and "could require more research" deserve to get stripped down.

Midnight research rarely stands up to scrutiny.
