Interesting heres an excerpt from Toronto Star.

The guess here is Burke was fired for one of two reasons.

One, at least half of the new MLSE ownership team, Bell, was seemingly prepared to fire Burke during the summer. The boss there, George Cope, reportedly disliked Burke’s management style and brash public comments, and thought he was “bad for the brand.”

Two, both Bell and Rogers are keen on a deal for Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo and Burke was resisting such a move. He said repeatedly of late that he was “90 per cent” certain he wanted to go with the combination of James Reimer and Ben Scrivens in net and had talked several times about his frustrations of dealing with Vancouver GM Mike Gillis, particularly since he wasn’t sure dealing for Luongo was the right move.

Clearly, it wasn’t anything Burke had done lately because the lockout had prevented all NHL general managers from making any moves since Sept. 15th.

The only real morsel that we got from the Leafs press conference that Burke's 'style' did not mesh well with the ownership group. Remember new ownership took over in August and something happened since then until today that Burke overstayed his welcome, the status quo for him changed from that day on and he obviously was not going to get a 100% backing from the new owners. Funny that they kept him in an adversary role instead of making a clean break.

The Luongo thing and the personality conflict kind of overlap IMO.

Unless Burke speaks out (which he likely won't while under contract), I guess we'll never know. The next couple of days and a possible acquisition of Luongo might be telling.

    Very funny.

They kept him on board so he will be less likely to run to the media and badmouth the owners immediately.

Comment from Harsh in the section below the article:

Vancouver should fire Gillis and hire Burke. Not only is Burke a better GM, he knows exactly how much Toronto is willing to give for Luongo.

    Hahahaha brilliant.
