The way he played last season I think it's time.

Well by using that criteria, Gomez should retire as well...

I don't think Holmstrom received enough credit, he was a fixture in front of the net and a true pain in the ass to play against. He paid the price game in and game out. Soak your wounds old warrior, enjoy your retirement!

If it's true, I'll miss him. Great player who never got the recognition he deserved.

    Hope he enjoys retirement!

    Interesting.
Holmstrom was consistently used for years on PP1 as the net-front presence.
This opens up a PP spot for another Red Wing forward along Dats & Z. Could be a huge spike for Filppula or Nyqvist or even Brunner?

The Wings were always my 2nd fave team, I'll miss Holmer.

    1) Gomez should retire.
    2) I wasn't criticizing Holmstrom. He's been one of my favorites over the years. He just didn't have a good season at all.

Holmstrom while not a potent offensive threat was a hard worker. Like you guy have mentioned, whilst not always posting big numbers a lot of opportunity was created through him. I think on the whole guys like him never really receive a lot of praise.

But on another note, who takes his place!?!

eric, I never thought for a second that you were criticizing Holmstrom and yeah, he definitely had a very poor season last year...time to hang them up.

Homer's body is just completely shot to hell, which is understandable after all the abuse he took for years.

Before he came to North America he was known as The Demolition Man here in Sweden. I remember when he went over and I never in a million years expected him to last this long. He should be sooooo proud of what he's accomplished. The man had sick hand-eye coordination and was completely fearless.

I wonder how many goals were wrongfully disallowed as pure reputation calls even when he was not even close to touching the opposing goalie

If behind the net is Gretzky's office, then right in front of the crease should be Homer's mancave.

To me Holmstrom defines what intangibles are all about. He wasn't big or fast, he just knew how to get the job done. Determination + hockey sense.

FROM CBS: Analysis: Perhaps if Tomas Holmstrom had been willing to compete for a job elsewhere, he could have squeezed another year out of his career. With 122 career power-play goals, Holmstrom is third in Red Wings history (Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom) while his reputation as a player willing to take abuse from opposing netminders and defensemen while camping out in front of the net was a driving factor in his success with the man advantage throughout his career. Holmstrom retires a four-time Stanley Cup Champion over a 15-year stretch in Detroit.

Pretty lofty guys to have your name with!!
