Default Rock/alternative song suggestions?

Update Sep 12: Thought it would be worth getting this thread active again. If you haven't seen it yet, please have a read through the posts, especially my responses, and if you have any suggestions fire away! Thanks.

Ok, this is a pretty vague request so hopefully I'll be able to narrow it down by mentioning a few of my favourite artists and songs I like from others. Generally speaking, I'm pretty out of the loop when it comes to 'newer' music, especially from North America as I've lived in Scotland for 10 years and tend to mostly listen to older music that I own or classic ones. It's so pop-focused over here that it's doing my head in!

That being said, I would appreciate some more recent suggestions in the rock/hard rock/alternative genre - even if some might be 'popular' - as I may not have heard of it before. But I am looking for unique songs, rather than some where you could close your eyes, listen to a few, and they all sound the same. I've noticed at times when I've watched a 2012 rock countdown that many songs lack originality (for my own tastes).

So, here's a list of some of my favourites, and some songs that I like from a few artists:

Some of my all time favourite artists (some):
Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers (older), Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Metallica, AC/DC and Nirvana.

Songs from other artists I enjoy (within past 20 years):
Alient Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Tool - Sober
Linkin Park - In the End / Numb
Korn - Falling Away from Me
System of a Down - Chop Suey
My Chemical Romance - Welcome to the Black Parade
Godsmack - Voodoo
Marilyn Manson - Personal Jesus/Sweet Dreams/The Beautiful People
Rammstein - Du Hast
Sven Gali - Under the Influence
Offspring - Self-Esteem
Guns 'n Roses - You Could Be Mine
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight and a few others
Muse - Time Is Running Out, Hysteria and a few others
Rage Against the Machine - Killing in the Name (update)
Evanescence - Bring Me To Life (update)

Some older classics:
Anvil - Metal on Metal
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Crazy World of Arthur Brown - Fire
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper
T-Rex - Children of the Revolution
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song/Gallows Pole

There are plenty more but I think that's plenty for now to give you an idea.

I look forward to hearing some suggestions. Feel free to ask questions if it helps.

Just went to see a band called Hey Rosetta! the other night. I'm a huge fan and they put on an absolutely awesome show. Definitely check them out... they have some great tunes.

I hear this thread... the new "rock"... is pretty mellow stuff.
Normally, when I try to ramp up my knowledge/auditing of a genre, I head over to billboard.com and see what they have listed in their top 100 songs (by genre).

Rock is pretty tame right now.
I like most of this stuff... but it's certainly no Pearl Jam/Smashing Pumpkins/GNR and it's nowhere near Tool/Korn/Godsmack.

You are somewhere between Alternative (Top Songs) and Hard Rock.
The Hard Rock album list has so many retro discs, it's a testament to a dying genre.

Try that alternative songs link and give a little play on each song.
It's a good quick way to get a snippett of the latest stuff.

While this isn't my Genre of expertise (I've went from a state similar to yours a few years back and went into more "melodic death metal" (or just much heavier stuff), I can send some ideas over (since you do have some of my favorite tracks in there, like "Don't Fear The Reaper", "Numb" and "Du hast").

Don't know if you've ever checked out Breaking Benjamin (Try "Diary of Jane" or "I Will Not Bow").

If you want something with a bit more "atmosphere" you can always try In The Silence ("Serenity").

And then... I don't really have much since I go more into the metal side of things with the rest of the bands I listen to.

Since you liked Metallica (I'd be talking the RTL/MoP/AJFA Metallica), you may have checked out Megadeth already (A lot off of the album "Rust In Piece" is crazy).

And you can always check out more Tool...
UHL - Detroit Red Wings
24 team H2H (W-:L) Dynasty - 3C/LW/RW/F, 6D, 1G.
G/A/(+/-)/PIM/SOG/PPP/SHP/GWG/HIT/BLK/FOW
W/GAA/SV/SV%/SHO

NHL Cap + 1M salary cap (AAV)

Thanks everyone so far - I will check those out.

BMac - totally forgot about Muse, I do like some of their stuff. They're huge over here. I'll update my list.

Since you like AC/DC and Metallica, how about going a little farther back in time. One of my all-time fave, Black Sabbath's Paranoid.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.

I always check out Songza and 8tracks for new songs/bands. Give those apps a gander.

Not a fan - they sound like many of the bands I was speaking of earlier.

Not bad. The only one I'd try again is Avenged Sevenfold to see if further listening makes a difference.

Muse are pretty good - I had forgotten about them. I've updated my list.

The others I'm not too fussed about, though Imagine Dragons' Radioactive is decent. Another one worthy of a second listen.
