Knowledge of positions, keepers, roster sizes, etc. might help but this seems a straight forward proven over potential to me. Good trade.

Forwards for defensemen trade-analysis always depends on roster allocation.

Most leagues use one of the following roster spot allocation quantities:
    *6F/4D (I prefer Voynov)
    *9F/4D (I prefer Roy)
    *9F/6D (I prefer Voynov)
    *12F/6D (I prefer Roy)

Pretty even trade overall. Voynov should emerge as a consistent 40+ pt dman which could be valuable in a points only league. Obviously Roy coming from a down year in Buffalo which led to him being shipped out of town. If the NHL plays "half" a season I'd expect Roy to produce around 40 points, a little less than a point per game, on his way to unrestricted free agency this summer.

I like Roy's new situation in Dallas. I think he'll return to form and be a quality fantasy producer if Healthy. Voynov...like most defense prospects... we won't see his full potential for a few more years...and even then...

    Good trade.

I agree here. Totally depends on the quality of player available on the wire (or the scarcity of players at each position).
