I was bored yesterday going through my Netflix and took the time to watch McFarland, USA staring Kevin Costner.
It's your cookie cutter, typical Disney sports movie based on real life events so it's predictable, but actually entertaining.
SPECTRE 007 - 7/10. I enjoyed this one for the most part, but it wasn't spectrecular (see what I did there!?).
Sicario - 7/10. Liked the subject matter, but the movie wasn't all I thought it could be.

The Walk-7.5/10
Very entertaining and worth watching. True story about a French high wire walker's dream to walk a high wire between the World Trade Towers in 1974, just prior to the 2nd tower opening. I actually remember this happening, although not vividly. Seeing the twin towers was a little eerie though.
Because it is not a documentary, it is a feature film. Which means that there are aesthetic considerations involved that have absolutely nothing to do with it's level of accuracy.
It can be true to the facts down to the word, but if it's just not a good film, it won't get good reviews or word-of-mouth. Then people won't feel compelled to go see it.
Getting the facts right (or not) does not guarantee success or failure for a film treatment.
Take The French Connection, for example. As far as facts are concerned it got almost nothing right. And yet it won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, and Actor.
RETIRED
Inherent Vice was pretty good ; caught it the other day .
slammed down some old charles bronson flicks too - mr. majestyk and the mechanic
thumbs up too all 3
Spectre - It was a disaster... Hands down, the worst James Bond I have seen in a long time. Maybe the worst James Bond movie of all time for me; certainly since A View to a Kill, and that INCLUDES the absolutely horrendous Quantum of Solace. They tried way too hard to mesh all of the past Bonds together, and it was a mess. There is a scene where Bond falls to his knees and begs Blofeld not to show the video to Swann; when have we ever seen Bond as a fall to your knees and beg for something kind of guy? In the end, SPOILER ALERT... he takes down a helicopter at 500 yards, with a pistol... Casino Royale was great (With the exception of the brutal poker scenes), and I was really excited for Daniel Craig as Bond. I was worried with the really bad Quantum of Solace, but Skyfall was pretty good. I give Spectre an unwatchable 2 out of 10...

I'm not saying that just because it is a true story, that it must be good. I've seen many bad movies based on true stories.
No doubt though, no film can be 100% accurate. Nothing that is repeated can be for that matter, and yes, aesthetics are used to enhance the viewing experience.
The French Connection was an excellent fictional movie based on real life events, where Concussion is a nonfictional film based on true facts and real names are used. I never said that Concussion was an Oscar worthy film. I don't think it was made to be one. I'm just saying that sports fans should watch it because it is based on real life athletes, and their ugly demise from head injuries. Head injuries that also occur in hockey.
BTW, I hear there is a movie in the works called The French Concussion.
I think there is a big difference between taking some aesthetic liberties, and boldly changing history, if you are presenting a movie that is based on a true story. For whatever reason, if movies based on real events are changed dramatically, it really bothers me. It bothers me to the point where it has a noticeable effect on the way I view the movie.
Take for instance, a movie like Argo. It took a few things and changed them to make it a little more tense. Apparently, the Iran authorities were aware that the diplomats were still in the country, but weren't as close to discovering them as the movie depicts. And there was no chase down the runway as their airliner was about to take off. Of course, for the diplomats, it was very tense and their lives were very much in danger, but the movie emphasized that danger. I am ok with that. The rest of the movie stays relatively true to what happened. I actually really enjoyed the movie.
Then you have a movie like Braveheart. Or Gladiator. They took so many liberties to "Hollywood" up themselves, that what is left doesn't resemble much of the truth. I have serious issues with that. I actually consider them both poor movies mostly because of the historical innacuracy. Maybe I take this kind of thing too seriously, but it REALLY bothers me.

Deadpool
8/10: Saw this one on opening night last Friday. Not the best Marvel movie but good action combined with Reynold's classic sarcasm/witty remarks make this one a fun one to watch nonetheless. This flick is not for kids though; strong language and blood is present from start to finish.
