Giroux and Briere articles in Le Droit
Le Droit, the french daily newspaper serving the Ottawa- Gatineau area (Gatineau is located just across the Ottawa River and located in Quebec) has two pages of articles per day about the Giroux-Briere experience in Germany. They sent a journalist there to cover the action of the newly acquired Munich Polar Bears french tandem.
Both Briere and Giroux are dear to hockey fans in Gatineau. Giroux played junior with the Olympiques while Briere is a born and bred Gatineau guy. Both are having a grand old time in Europe.
They have been good friends for a long time. Giroux lived with the Briere's when Daniel was with his first wife and he rented Briere's condo in Ottawa during the summer while working out at Tony Greckop's. Giroux's and Briere's parents )Daniel Briere's mother passed away recently), family and friends are mostly in the Ottawa area.
Both play on the second line with the Munich team because the German tradition usually has the team captain on the first line. Both are getting banged up on their opponents home ice but not on home ice. The crowd is described as fantastic. The much smaller arena is described as louder than the Bell Center in Montreal. Giroux admits he sometimes surprises himself watching people in the stands during the game. He mentions the mentality of people there is different. He pauses and laughs tallking about a guy he saw on a bike with a cigarette in one hand and a beer in the other.
Coach Don Jackson is extremely satisfied with the Briere-Giroux tandem. Le Droit journalist SAylvain St-Laurent is leaving Munich tomorrow and will head off to Switzerland to spend a few days following Jason Spezza's team.
