    Default Draft evaluation

So, the extended draft is finally over. Before evaluating, here is a bit of history. I went onto the end of last year with no picks in the first 4 rounds. I was really going for it, so I traded them. Then at the deadline I traded Niemi for Campbell and a 1st. I already had Thomas and Crawford, so I felt OK. It's a contract pool (which is why some teams stopped drafting much earlier) We sign a player for 1-4 years. (signed players can still be dropped). After going for it I was left with a lot of one year players. But, we can re-sign one player each. So, I targeted the teams without great options to resign and pulled the following off-season deals.

Byfuglian-Halak (who I would soon deal away)
Then Quick became available, so I traded Chara for him, making him a lock to be my re-sign
Datsyuk (who I was planning on keeping)-2nd
    Hartnell-3rd
    Campbell-3rd
    St. Louis 4th+ Grabovski
Then I flipped Halak and a first (11th overall) for the first overall
Just as the draft was starting I also dealt Cammileri for Briere as there was a shortage of good C to be drafted

And the draft went like so….(I am Wabamun)

I think I missed out big on Shultz and Kreider. CBS is horrible for finding players, and worse for ranking them, so you just don't see them until you search deep. Shultz still shouldn't have got to me as I would have had him as the first D taken. Kreider I thought was already on a team, I was just as lee at the wheel. I traded up because I felt it was the multi-cat Lucic and everyone else as far as skaters go. I din't improve my back up goalie, but quick will play most of the time anyway, and someone will appear on waivers eventually for me to drop Emery. I also got scooped on Nyquist. I was sure I was going to land him in round 5, but he got taken one pick before me. If I could go back, I would have taken him in round 4. But around the middle of round 4 is when the AHL stats came purring in, so players who were doing really well started to get grabbed by those that normally don't pay too much attention to inexperienced players.

    Can you repost/clarify your trades?

You traded Datsyuk and Hartnell for 2nd and 3rd rounders, and MSL for Grabovski?

Was there a reason you had to trade them? Cuz the players chosen are much worse.

Guess Quick is solid in nets, but he had back surgery and Emery isn't even a starter.

Your D is much worse, from Chara and Byfuglien to White and Voynov.

As it states in the top, it's a contract league. We sign a player for 1-4 years. And each year we can re-sign one player, and a player can only be re-signed once. So I had Datsyuk, Byfuglian, St. Louis, Campbell, Hartnell, Crawford, I White, Vrbata, and one or two more with expired contracts. I could only re-sign one. Then I traded for Quick, who's contract was also up, and he became the obvious guy to re-sign. If I didn't trade those guys for other GM's to re-sign they would have become free agents in the draft.

Ok thanks for clarification. i just haven't played in these contract leagues, seems to try to prevent a team from staying a dynasty.

Man, it must have been tough to have to gut your team like that.

I see why you went the way you did. Having Quick in net, barring a catastrophic injury, should be as solid as it gets. I might have tried to grab a better back-up than Emery just for safety's sake. A guy like Elliott in the 3rd (over Despres) or Bobrovsky in the 4th might have been nice. My thinking is if you're going to give the spot to someone he might as well have the capability of giving you points. And if Quick goes down you're pretty much sunk, considering the weighing of the categories.

With the 1st overall I think you made the right call. Lucic will help you everywhere, so I probably would have done the same thing. It's a damn shame you missed out on Kreider and Schultz, but it looks like you weren't the only one that made that mistake. I can't imagine anyone taking Stalberg, Bouwmeester or a bunch of the other guys that went ahead of Schultz if they had known he was available. Same with Kreider. Penner? McQuaid? Alzner?

I'd be tempted to just roll out Zidlicky, Nikitin, Voynov and Faulk as my 4D every week, if that's an option. Might seem a bit strange, but I don't think White is going to get you anything more than any of them. I feel strongly that his +/- is going to take a huge hit this year without Lidstrom to bail him out. The guy I would have loved to land would have been Downie.

Tough luck that Nyquist went 1 pick ahead of you, but Barberio was probably the best D prospect option available. Might have looked at Erixon, but it's really a toss up at this point. Getting Conacher in the 7th makes a lot of sense too.

I think you made a great pick with Brunner. If he can keep it up with Datsyuk (or is it Zetterberg... I forget) then he could be a great piece for you. Potentially even more valuable than Kreider.

I like the Vatanen pick - I've got him in 2 leagues myself - but I might have been tempted to go for Hudler. That goes into my "run 4 defensemen" idea, but Hudler will be given a lot of time to click in Calgary because they are paying him so much coin. Who knows if it'll last, but he'll get his shot.

Tough to comment on the last pick in the draft because I don't know who would have been available to you with that pick, but Palmieri seems as good a pick as any.

All told I think you made out fairly well. Getting all those picks was a pretty amazing feat, even though they seem so lopsided. If you hadn't your team would be a lot worse. Hindsight is 20/20, but I'd be happy with that what you did if I were you, Kreider and Schultz aside.

I don't like Having Emery on my team either. But it seems there is always someone that pops up on waivers. So, I decided to wait it out to find a backup. Nabby is actually still available when waivers start. I'm also hopeful that is one of the prospects I picked late just comes bolting out of the gate, I can turn that into some trade value. I knew having a gutted team was going to be brutal. But I didn't want to know I was going to be average at best going in. That's why instead of the Hudler and Kuniz type guys, I just gambled. Taking guys that good exceed that level,or fail miserably. There are always guys like cleary etc. on the waiver wire.
