Plenty of blame to go around here, but in the end your goalie has to steal games for you. The offense kept giving Kari the chance to be the hero and as is his way this season pissed it away. Goaltending almost has to be the first priority in trades and free agent signings. Plenty of goalies can come to their team's rescue when the defense bungles things, but the Stars no longer have that luxury. You can't count on Kari to keep them IN a game, let alone steal one.

If your "first priority" is to find a goalie who "has to steal games for you" then I think that's an indicator the team has bigger issues than the goalie...

Oh this team still has issues on defense, no doubt there. I'm not giving them a pass at all. But look at all the good goalies around the league. There are nights when they steal wins for whatever reason. You should expect a #1 goalie to step up in those situations where the defense in front of him is playing poorly, or the offense just can't find the net. You expect them to get some wins here and there when it's all on his shoulders, to get those critical saves. Kari's just not getting it done this year.

It would be a big boost if they had somebody to help shoulder that burden, but once again we don't have that backup. I think the strain is starting to get in Kari's head and we're seeing it on the ice.

So Lindback gets the start does he. If your going to get him a start with an eye towards getting him going can't ask for a better spot for it.....Oh wait this is the same Sabres team that beat the Habs three times this year.

    A: "In Anders We Trust"
Q: Name a statement you're not likely to hear in Dallas?

Gerry Fraley has a piece in The Dallas Morning News about Ruff putting Kari on a short leash. Here's the damning quote...

“Obviously, we need [Lehtonen] to be better,” Ruff said. “There’s no masking that point. … It seems like every night, the other goalie is outdueling us.”
    Here's the full article...

Still doesn't address the other shortcomings, namely a porous D, but it is the truth. The Stars have lost games this season when the D has been adequate because Kari allows Stay-puft marshmallow goals at the worst times. Not that there's ever a good time to let in a soft goal. He's gotten out-goalied far too often, which hasn't been the case until this season.

You guys may still be safe here. I have to find it, but our record lately when out-shooting an opponent is....not good.

And man most every night it seems like the opposing netminder looks like vintage Roy or Brodeur.

Ho-hum. We see 4 or 5 of those a game against us. At least this one was different....it didn't actually find twine.

Found what I was looking for, or close enough, on the Stars record when out-shooting their opponents...

    Daryl Reaugh @Razor5Hole · Jan 29 Last 4 Stars losses they outshot opp 40-30, 47-22, 37-27, 42-26 Last 3 wins they were outshot 41-34, 32-26, 41-29 #AdvanceStatthis
Since he posted that tweet the trend continues, with the exception of the 6-3 win that same night in Ottawa...

    1-31 W 5-3 SOG: WPG-40, DAL-32

    2-3 L 3-2 SOG: COL-24, DAL-32

    2-5 L 5-3 SOG: TBL-29, DAL-36

    2-7 L 3-2 SOG: BUF-24, DAL-40

What does it all mean....I ain't got a damn clue. We have obviously hacked off the Hockey Gods. you've got to think though, if you keep putting that many pucks on net eventually your lucks gonna change.

    So......

I'm reminded of a lyric from Tool's song Lateralus.....

"I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me"

That's been this season as a Stars fan. Random. Chaotic. Bewildering(good and bad). The thing is as we near the 3/4 pole I'm learning to just embrace the random. Tonight the random takes the form of getting the two shorties against a team that had until tonight not allowed a single shorthanded goal. And that peculiar, mystifying, little curveball empty-netter. Hey, at least we aren't a boring team even though most nights we wish they didn't put us through the emotional wringer.

And the pattern continues. The Stars get out-shot and come away with the W. It's getting to the point where they can look at the shot totals and start thinking, "poor bastards we got them right where we want 'em". Of course it's working the other way around too, but still, I'm just glossing over that less positive aspect and cherry picking the good.
