    Default 4/1/12 v. Flyers (3rd Period)

    - Penguins buzzing early in the third on the PP. Crosby and Neal both with pretty good chances in the first 30 seconds or so. This time, however, the Penguins are using Letang with 4 forwards (Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz).

    - Chris Kunitz goes off for interference at 1:12 to negate the Penguins' PP - that was actually creating sustained offense for the first time today. Some 4-on-4 hockey for about 30 seconds before an abbrev. PP for the Flyers.

    - MAF with a monster save on Hartnell near the 2:30 mark, but soon after Wayne Simmonds scores at 2:35 on the PP to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead - Voracek and Giroux with the apples. Curious to see how the Penguins will respond to three consecutive goals from the Flyers over the past two periods.

    - Just before the 5:00 mark Crosby's line creates some pretty good chances, sustained pressure in the Flyers zone. Good cycling and puck possession and support could help the Pens gain some momentum here. Malkin's line hasn't been faring so well against Maxime Talbot's pairing this afternoon, so Crosby will be leaned on down the stretch for sure.

    - Jakub Voracek is sprung on a breakaway at 6:37 and is able to beat MAF on a sweet forehand > backhand move with great speed - assists to Wellwood and Coburn. Flyers lead 4-2 with just over a half-period left in regulation.

    - Despite a 35-20 lead in SOG, the Penguins have been pretty well outplayed in this contest since late in the 1st / early in the 2nd period. The Flyers have been able to largely negate the Penguins' PP, creating chances of their own on the SH, and Bobrovsky has been superior to MAF in almost every respect.

    - Matt Cooke takes a slashing penalty at 9:09 after a TK turnover, and the Penguins will go on a huge PK that could put this one out of reach. MAF with a couple big saves on Brayden Schenn past the halfway point of the PP chance to keep the Pens alive.

    - With just over 8+ minutes to play, Crosby and Malkin are on the ice together creating pretty effectively. Crosby slides a puck behind through his legs off the rush then posts up beside the net for a slick deflection. Bobrovsky makes the stop, and another on Malkin's rebound chance.

-Right off a faceoff, Bourdon fires a long shot from the point beating MAF off the goalpost after glancing off Michalek in front of the net - assist to Giroux. 5-2 Flyers at 13:15 of the third period.

-Steve Sullivan scores his second goal of the game on a howitzer from the slot at 15:18 to give the Penguins some life late in the third - assists to Dupuis and Michalek.

    - Michalek with a great opportunity with 3:30 left in the third, firing a puck from the slot but Bobrovsky is able to snag the shot and maintain the Flyers two-goal lead. Penguins lead in SOG 43-24.

    - With 2:10 remaining James Neal nearly scored right off the faceoff, right off the crossbar up into the netting. Penguins are fighting hard to get back in this game, but it may be too little too late.

-MAF coming off the ice with 1:45 remaining is forced to streak back to the net to make a save on Matt Read, sprawling out like Brodeur with the stick flying out. Manages to keep the puck out off his mask, Lundqvist style.

-Voracek fires in an EN goal from center ice to put the game out of reach, 6-3 Philadelphia. That's the game, folks.

The highlight of the game for the Penguins this afternoon was most definitely Pascal Dupuis' 14-game point scoring streak, and the lowlight was definitely the dying seconds of the third period when shit pretty much hit the fan. Tony Granato and Peter Laviolette were basically screaming at each other and both were ejected from the contest after a series of fights broke out late in the game. I guess the Flyers had to act like total babies when Vitale just SMASHED Briere with a hit cleaner than a baby's bottom. Time to get dirty I suppose. Classless. Total absence of class for Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in the final minute.

    - Chris Kunitz scores on the PP to bring the Penguins within 2, but it won't make any difference with only 32 seconds remaining in the contest. Assists to Malkin and Crosby.

It's going to be a great playoff series between these two teams. So much hate.

Boxscore for Player TOI and Statistics

    Three Stars:

    1. Sergei Bobrovsky was the most outstanding player on either squad today, stopping 43/47 shots fired on him by the Penguins, and making a number of amazing stops including a point-blank stop in Crosby in the 2nd period. Bobrovsky stood on his head, and the Flyers are now 1 point back of the Penguins in a very interesting Atlantic Division race.

    2. Claude Giroux weaved his magic on this afternoon, scoring a somewhat flukey goal and adding two assists (his 60th and 61st of the season) with 1 SOG in just ovre 19+ minutes TOI.

    3. Jakub Voracek scored two goals (one into the EN) and added an assist in today's game, with 4 SOG and a +2 rating in a mere 13:40 TOI. Quality game from Voracek in limited ice-time.

    It's playoffs time!!

Penguins will head to the 1st round series against Flyers with almost fully healthy lineup. Lovejoy is ahead of schedule and has been cleared for contact so he's close on returning. Sullivan and Neal missed the last couple of games of regular season but are well rested and fully healthy going into the playoffs. Niskanen is the only questionmark but he shouldn't be too far away on returning. Strait struggled in the last couple of games he played so I'm hoping one of Niskanen or Lovejoy is ready once the puck drops tomorrow.

Hey Pens guys -any word on Niskanen?

I drafted him in the last round of my pool hoping he'd be ready, but he sat last game.

Do you guys think that Kennedy might play on Sid's line if we can't find a better winger through free agency or trade?

I sincerely hope the Pens finally get somebody to play with Crosby. Not even for fantasy purposes, just to see what can happen.

Kennedy or Tangradi should see minutes with Crosby if no one is brought in anymore. More likely both are given tryouts with Crosby and who looks better there will get more chances to play with Sid.

Dustin Jeffrey would be dark horse to get a chance to play with Crosby.

All the d-men are anticipated to be top 4, many with sound defensive acumens, but are there any heirs to Letang's position?

I own Morrow in 2 leagues and can grab Despres in one, but both seem to be at least 2-3 years away. Is Morrow still the consensus favourite?

Many feel that Pouliot has the higher upside, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, upside is potential. From the sample size of what Morrow did last year paired up with Letang, who is still a young man in his own right, I'll take my chances with Morrow. If they can build on that chemistry, it's going to be scary.

Despres is NHL ready right now. With Bortuzzo and Strait in the mix it's not guaranteed that Despres will be in NHL when the games resume but I expect him to take a spot in the Pens' defense right away.

Morrow needs time in the AHL to get better defensively become he'll get called up in NHL. But I would be disappointed if it took 2-3 years. He should become NHL ready in two years at the most. He's got great offensive tools and that's something Pens will need soon - along with his cheap ELC contract when Letang is due to a raise.
