Default Dobberhockey Pro League - Campbell

I figured the Wales has one so we should as well. We had 13 teams this year, not sure why the difference between this and the other Pro League, but no biggie.

My only hockey pool this year since I basically took a break from hockey pools for a bit after suffering a couple bitterly horrific years and not having fun.

Went into this pool with the intent of just enjoying myself.

Prep included.... nothing. No lists, no guides, no Guru tools, no pre-ranking etc. I showed up and drafted guys based on "feel". I suspect it will utterly fail, but we'll see.

Was drafting in the Glenn Anderson's 9 spot

    1) Ryan Miller: Needed a goalie. He's a good one.

    2) Brad Richards: He's a center but a good one. Just a hunch that he'll perform well this year. Lots of "hunches" in this draft for me.

    3) Corey Crawford: Needed another goalie. He's also a good one. Lots of starts between my 2 goalies and I should have a top 3 tandem this year I figure.

    4) Patrick Marleau: It was time to get at least one decent LW.

    5) Joe Thornton: Another C? Yeah, I mean I remember when Thornton was a top 10 pick in these leagues. This seems like good value regardless of position.

    6) Alexander Edler: Defense were starting to get picked through so it was time to grab a stud - hopefully I did that.

    7) Steve Downie: Last season I noted that a lot of winning teams had Downie on it. I am hoping he can be my multicat lucky charm. My first RW

    8) Ryan Clowe: LWs are going like crazy and Clowe gives some groovy peripherals.

    9) Brent Burns: I am liking the Sharks this year as usual. Another "hunch" pick and he gives more PIMy goodness.

    10) Patric Hornqvist: Another solid multicat winger on the RW

    11) RJ Umberger: Meh...needed a LW and Umberger is a classic "solid" pick

    12) David Perron: LWers were going nonstop and this finishes off the slot with a guy I think could really bounce back with some good across the board stats.

    13) Brian Campbell: Good value for a guy who should have a big role.

    14) Jakub Voracek: Not a fan of this pick, but needed another RWer.

    15) Shawn Horcoff: Yuck. He better produce early or I'll be in some trouble.

    16) Victor Hedman: Hunch pick. PIM + expecting an upswing in points this year.

    17) Dan Girardi: Defense were FLYING off the board every round. Girardi is...okay - hoping for a decent amount of ice time from him.

    18) Jiri Hudler: I really expect a much improved season from him and he fills out my RW nicely.

    19) Ryan Ellis: Swing for the fences. Big bust potential, but could be a nice surpise as well. Was my 6D.

    20) Sam Gagner: Barf. I suspect he'll be off my roster within 2 weeks. Not a fan of my C position after the massive drop off after the top 2.

    21) Anthony Stewart: Drafting for the bench now and Stewart's role in Carolina this year could be surprising. If he doesn't pan out .. oh well.

    22) Nik Antropov: Insurance for my weak bottom Cs. Who knows.

    23) Tom Gilbert: Hold and watch. Won't start him at all if he produces at his usual -2 per game pace.

    24) Antero Niittyymmaakkii - Why not. Niemi gets hit by an asteroid and I might get some wins.

    25) Wojtek Wolski - LOVE this pick. Could get primo icetime with the Rangers and really be excellent value at this point.

C: B Richards, Thornton, Horcoff, Gagner, Antropov
LW: Marleau, Clowe, Umberger, Perron, Wolski
RW: Downie, Hornqvist, Voracek, Hudler, A. Stewart
D: Edler, Burns, Campbell, Hedman, Girardi, Ellis, Gilbert
    G: Miller, Crawford, Niittymaki

Conclusion: Zero idea how I'll do.

The reason for the difference is that we had some teams not sign up to Yahoo in time. We were supposed to have 13 teams (including Dummy Commish), but only had 11.

    Default

I'm Lupul on my Clitsome. Here are my thoughts:

    1. (3) Steven Stamkos*- What can I say, I'm a fan of guys that can put up 50-50-100 with lots of PPP. Goals are the toughest thing to acquire later in this league.

    2. (24) Sidney Crosby*- I would have taken him much earlier than this. My draft plan to take goalies back to back in rounds 2 and 3 is now out the window.

    3. (29) Cam Ward*- Luckily Ward is still available. Not a great GAA, but reasonable wins and lots of saves. It would be nice to see the GAA drop this year, but I'm not holding my breath.

    4. (50) Dustin Byfuglien*- Quit calling my #1 D fat. Even if his points regress, he gets more PIM than any other top D and shoots the puck a lot.

    5. (55) Marian Gaborik*- Needed a RW, and it was him or Heatley. Like I said above, you can acquire other stats later in the draft/season but not Goals. I was burned by Gaborik last year. It can't happen two years in a row right? Right? The silence is scary.

    6. (76) Kari Lehtonen*- Figured I didn't have enough injury risks with Crosby and Gaborik. Goalies go fast in this league, and the pickins were thin. Very thin. At this point I decided I needed a solid 3rd goalie as well.

    7. (81) David Backes*- Needed a winger. Needed some grit. Last year's amazing plus/minus won't be repeated, but getting close to last year's numbers makes him a steal here. He'll be close to last year's numbers right? Right? Argh.

    8. (102) Michael Cammalleri*- Back on the injury/upside/goals train. Man the wingers get thin fast in a 13 team league with position requirements. Nice to wait 8 rounds for my first ex-flame.

    9. (107) Niklas Backstrom*- Wanted Roloson as my third goalie but he went right before me. This allows me to play matchups and not cry when Kari gets injured and Dallas sucks. It feels like I should have placed more weight on Dallas sucking a few rounds earlier.

    10. (128) Niklas Kronwall*- I like his potential with Rafalski out of town. He plays with an edge, and being in Detroit helps the plus/minus. In hindsight, the number of injury risks has now reached an alarming state.

    11. (133) Brooks Laich*- Need a winger. Wanted on on a team with a great plus/minus. Books also shoots the puck a lot. I'm always hoping he'll take his game to the next level but am not holding my breath.

    12. (154) Brandon Dubinsky*- Love the grit. Like the potential upside if he plays with Gaborik/Richards. Wing eligibility would be a nice bonus.

    13. (159) Kevin Shattenkirk*- Time for the guys with warts. This wart will get points, but won't help in the PIM category.

    14. (180) Joni Pitkanen - Yuck - D is getting thin. Still getting guys that will get powerplay time. This wart is going to hurt my plus minus.

    15. (185) Kevin Bieksa*- He'll be better than last year. He needs to be given this ranking. Luckily he still takes dumb penalties and will luckily be on the ice lots with the team that helps plus minus more than anyone else in the league.

    16. (206) Ville Leino - Not sure I even remember what I was thinking. Let's just say I must be hammered by this point in the draft. Hopefully he is solid. From here on out, hopefully they produce. If not, they will be waived.

    17. (211) Steve Ott*- Needed some PIM. Desperation move though.

    18. (232) Danny Cleary*- Old and injury prone.

    19. (237) Clarke MacArthur*- Hate the leafs. Instead of booze, I'm going to claim that I let my 3 year old make a few picks for me.

    20. (258) Andrej Meszaros*- Once again, if you aren't getting a guy that is on the powerplay, he needs to be getting you PIM or be awesome at plus/minus. I expect Philly to continue to be good 5 on 5.

    21. (263) Andy Greene*- He was better the second half of last year. That's lucky because his first half was horrible. Like - you shouldn't be in the league horrible. Yep - Cheechoo horrible.

    22. (284) Cal Clutterbuck*- I like grit with potential to put the puck in the net. Plus - come on, it's the 284th pick in the draft. What do you expect?

    23. (289) Valtteri Filppula - It looks like I'm hoping Detroit players play well.

    24. (310) Sergei Kostitsyn*- Too much upside to be still on the board at 310.

    25. (315) Joel Ward*- liked watching him in the playoffs. I was tired and wanted the draft to end.

I'm happy with the team, but need a few guys to stay healthy. I haven't punted almost any categories except possibly GAA. Should be a fun league.

My team was Last Resort and it's a bit different from my typical team. Usually I draft my first C around 8-10th round and go D-heavy early so I would usually have 2-3 defensemen by 10th round. This time I missed on a few defensemen I was targeting so took wingers instead. Combine that with taking Malkin in the 1st round and my team is more balanced than usual, we'll see how it goes.

    1. (5) Evgeni Malkin (Pit - C) I am pretty high on him still despite injury issues and poor performance last season. I don't really like picking centers high, but I didn't really want to pick goalie either or Parise that I considered as well, but he would likely be available at my 2nd round pick so no reason to pick him here.

    2. (22) Jaroslav Halak (StL - G) Parise was still available, but decided to go with a goalie after 9 goalies went before me as I didn't want to miss on Tier 1 goalie.

    3. (31) Jonas Hiller (Anh - G) Parise went just ahead of me and Green as well so decided to with a 2nd goalie. I like Hiller more than most and combination of Halak and Hiller should give me good stats in all 3 goalie categories.

    4. (48) Alexander Semin (Was - RW) I was planning to pick D here, but my targets Weber and Chara went so decided to go with highest ranked winger. I was very happy to Semin though, especially since he was 3rd ranked RW on my list.

    5. (57) Dany Heatley (Min - RW) Plan was to pick Byfuglien here, but he goes few picks before me so decided to with highest ranked winger again. I would have preferred LW here, but Heatley was significantly highly ranked than best LW, Neal, on my list so decided to go with him. Neal would probably be available at my 6th and maybe at 7th pick so no reason to pick him yet. I am really hoping Heatley gets LW eligibility though.

    6. (74) James Neal (Pit - LW) Once again my waiting on D backfires as both Boyle and Subban go about half a round ahead of my pick. I don't have any LW yet so it's about time I pick one.

    7. (83) Chris Pronger (Phi - D) Finally I get a dman where I wanted and Pronger was last available in my dmen Top10 so happy to get at least one top dman, especially since I usually have 2 or 3 by this round of the draft.

    8. (100) Mikko Koivu (Min - C) It seems I have M.Koivu on a lot of my team. It seems he's always available around 100th pick and I think he's good value at this point of the draft.

    9. (109) Andrei Markov (Mon - D) Injury prone yes and probably a bit of a reaction to missing on many of the dmen I was hoping to get. Markov was the highest D on my list left and I was confident my top targets at RW and LW, Selanne and E.Kane, would be available when my next 2 picks would come around.

    10. (126) Teemu Selanne (Anh - RW) Happy to select Selanne as my 3rd RW. I don't expect him to match last season's totals, but about 60 points in 70 GP would be reasonable expectation.

    11. (135) Evander Kane (Wpg - LW) One of my top breakout candidates, could be very nice multicat performer if takes the jump to the next level. A bit risky probably, but I am very high on him.

    12. (152) Erik Johnson (Col - D) Time to address the defense a bit more so I add another solid multicat performer.

    13. (161) Andy McDonald (StL - C) Really hoped to Plekanec here, but he went just so had a hard decision on who to draft here as I didn't really like anyone that much. The decision was between Pacioretty, Gionta and Mcdonald. Decided to finally go with McDonald since the other were more likely to available at later rounds and McDonald possibly getting LW eligibility would be nice.

    14. (178) Brian Gionta (Mon - RW) My 4th RW, another solid contributor who's available pretty late in nearly every draft. I really like my RW at this point: Semin, Heatley, Selanne and Gionta is very nice.

    15. (187) Max Pacioretty (Mon - LW) Another potential breakthrough candidate that I have a high expectations. Good multicat potential as well with nice SOG and PIM totals.

    16. (204) Kimmo Timonen (Phi - D) Another typical solid contributor pick from me. Quietly puts up solid totals in most categories.

    17. (213) David Booth (Fla - LW) Wanted another LW and needed G and SOG especially so decided to roll the dice with Booth.

    18. (230) Alex Steen (StL - C) Active lineup was 2 D and 1 C short and didn't really like any of the defensemen so went with a center. Steen also has decent chance of getting LW eligibility so went with him.

    19. (239) Michael Frolik (Chi - RW) Didn't really need another RW, but he was best available RW at my rankings by quite a lot and didn't like any of the D left that much.

    20. (256) Steve Montador (Chi - D) Wanted a bit of extra PIM and Montador isn't a bad option at this point. Not bad shot totals either for a dman who doesn't play much at powerplay.

    21. (265) Mark Dekanich (Cls - G) The last few round are here so time to make some longshots on goalies that I think might have a chance at stealing starter's spot. I have absolutely no confidence in S.Mason so I think there's are real chance of Dekanich stealing the No1 role from Mason. If he doesn't, I'll just drop him and it isn't a much of a loss at this point of the draft.

    22. (282) Cody Franson (Tor - D) Very nice production in Nashville considering the limited icetime and another of my sleepers for this season. Could really surprise a lot of people if gets a significant role on Toronto.

    23. (291) Alexander Salak (Chi - G) Another longshot G. I don't really have much confidence in Crawford either. I expect similar season to Howard's last season from Crawford and it's certainly not out of question for him to lose his No1 role

    24. (308) Tyler Kennedy (Pit - LW) Just a depth LW for the bench, nothing special at this point of the draft.

    25. (317) Matt Carkner (Ott - D) Didn't really like any of the defensemen available, so this was a bit of a random pick. First to go when picking up FAs so doesn't really matter much.

Pretty balanced team overall so I am happy about my team. Lots of injury prone players though so that's a bit of worry, but hoping for the best.

Starting this draft i was somewhat concerned my draft tracking program (similar to HPG draft Guru) wasn't going to work because i didn't have time to test it out. So as a fall back i had the Draft Guru also ready to go.
In saying that i also spent 0 time on my rankings or projections so i was counting a lot on the rankings from HPG.
Once the draft started i realized my draft program didn't work for me and had issues with HPG draft guru not to mention i was scrambling too much to keep anything up-to-date with the picks. So normally i feel better coming out of a draft this is my first draft in a long time with 0 prep and more than a few of my picks were done only because my time was at < 5 seconds remaining!
In saying that i am happy with my G's and D's and think i have a decent mix up front.
Also because i was scrambling all night i can't really say who took guys i wanted or who else was on the board still!

    Serious Chinny

    1. (12) Carey Price (Mon - G) - Always like to be solid in net and HPG had him as #1 for our stats.

    2. (15) Pekka Rinne (Nsh - G) - Again decided i was going to go G/G before the draft but would of taken Crosby here if he was available (which he was, i just wasn't prepared for it and i assumed he wasn't available!)

    3. (38) Shea Weber (Nsh - D) - Was to high on the rankings i was using not to take him over anyone else

    4. (41) Zdeno Chara (Bos - D) - Another D? I never draft D this early and now i have 2, yes they are both solid but still unsure about this pick, but again to high in my rankings to pass on.

    5. (64) Mike Richards (LA - C) - Have high hopes for him, didn't want my first forward to be a C but i think he is going to explode this year

    6. (67) P.K. Subban (Mon - D) - HPG loves D, another D with such a high ranking compared to my other available players i couldn't pass on him

    7. (90) Jamie Benn (Dal - LW) – Wanted to get a LW soon, like his potential and I am hoping for big things

    8. (93) Dustin Brown (LA - RW) – Again, I think this is a ranking thing, his PIM (I think) had him ranked pretty high on HPG and I wanted to go RW here.

    9. (116) Tyler Ennis (Buf - LW) – Felt my scoring stats were lacking and he had the best stats at the time for my team.

    10. (119) Matt Moulson (NYI - LW) – Another strictly scoring stat guy, wanted to bump up those stats, hope he continues to play and click with JT

    11. (142) Kyle Okposo (NYI - RW) – Was really trying to avoid picking another C and felt good in D and G so I kept grabbing wingers

    12. (145) James Wisniewski (Cls - D) – Saw him still on the board and I don’t think anyone has a better 4th D. After this pick really liked my D and expect those 4 to give me the stats of some teams full 6 D.

    13. (168) Teddy Purcell (TB - RW) – Another potential guy that I am hoping for big things from

    14. (171) Patrik Berglund (StL - C) – Needed a C and hoping he does breakout this year

    15. (194) Jordan Staal (Pit - C) – Had him in my queue before the Berglund pick, then I ran out of time and just grabbed him, hope he gets some Malkin time this year

    16. (197) Colby Armstrong (Tor - RW) – No idea, wanted a winger (LW I think) but somehow grabbed him

    17. (220) Martin Erat (Nsh - RW) – Still scrambling and wanting that LW but grabbed another RW, don’t ask

    18. (223) Ryan Malone (TB - LW) – Hey grabbed a LW, probably within seconds of running out of time

    19. (246) Derek Stepan (NYR - C) – Needed a 4th C, and I am pretty sure a guy I was going to pick went right before me, so I got Stepan

    20. (249) Paul Martin (Pit - D) – Need to fill my D, like I said my last 2 D will be in and out as I really like my top 4

    21. (272) Johnny Boychuk (Bos - D) – See above

    22. (275) Dan Carcillo (Chi - LW) – Umm see he was on the screen when I was running out of time and I grabbed him? Maybe he can do spot PIM duty for me

    23. (298) Brian Boyle (NYR - C) – Hopefully one of Stepan or Boyle step up

    24. (301) Chris Mason (Wpg - G) – Had a few other goalies in mind but the started to go after I took Carcillo, not a bad 3rd G I don’t think.

    25. (324) Dan Hamhuis (Van - D) – Thought I better have a D on the bench.

I think i am happy with my team but time will tell!

    Dobber Sports Initiate

    Default week 5

somehow the expectoraters are leading dobber's pro-campbell. looking back at the draft, this seems quite a bit more than improbable....

i got notice of the draft time a week into my two week golfing vacation. date set for the sunday i was scheduled to be driving home from kelowna ( northern montana/ eastern bc; my wife and i got in 24 rounds in 17 days. if you are a golfer, and have the opportunity, you MUST play faldo's design, the wilderness club, in eureka montana). so, zero prep. just loaded up dobber's draft list.

on draft sunday, i dropped my wife off at the kelowna airport and drove to hope, rented a room and didn't pay until i was certain their wireless was good.

last season i was fully prepared, had target numbers for each category, grabbed letang as my first d-man, mid draft, picked bobrovsky off the wire, traded for ryan, and won the league on the last day by a single goal against.

this year, no list, no prep, savvy, winning competitors. i just hope to finish out of the basement. followed my general roto strategy, goals, goals, and more goals.

    expectoraters

    1. (4) Corey Perry
    (Anh - RW)

    an easy one.

    2. (23) Tim Thomas
    (Bos - G)

first panic pick...10 goalies already off the board. and crosby still available. i flash on dobber's notes, rask coming off knee surgery, thomas as good as there is right now.

    3. (30) Henrik Zetterberg
    (Det - LW)

    shots, goals, +/-, ppp, lw.

    4. (49) Eric Staal
    (Car - C)

hate grabbing centers early. still, shots, goals, ppp, pms. hoping his +/- is ok. (!!!)

    5. (56) Craig Anderson
    (Ott - G)

i hated this pick. still do. panic. 18 goalies picked already.

    6. (75) Chris Stewart
    (StL - RW)

i loved this pick. thought i'd stolen him.

given that none of my top six are leading anything, and a couple are anchors...how is this team first ?

    7. (82) Joe Pavelski
    (SJ - C)

add in rw elig, and here is a steal.

    8. (101) Paul Stastny
    (Col - C)

    too many centers this early.

    9. (108) James van Riemsdyk
    (Phi - LW)

    banking on a break-out.

    10. (127) Ales Hemsky

since the draft, i've added craig smith, khabibulin, clarkson, greening, potter, and mcdonagh.

the league is very tight. wake up any morning and you could be first or seventh. i am first in goals, near last in assists. trying to make a trade, need a big assist center, or a ppqb.
somehow i'm tied for second in +/-. though with carolina playing tonight, i could free-fall again. dammit eric!
