Trade/final keeperSpot
Would you guys in an offseason move Kris Medlen AND a guy I will drop Josh Johnson for Maddy Bumgarner?
Is he an upgrade on Medlen in your opinion? Do you prefer Jered Weaver instead? thanks |

agree with your plan to drop/trade JJ. |
Medlen:
THe positives: 1 - His stats were unreal. 2 - He's an NL pitcher meaning more K's without the DH. 3 - He's on a contender and ace of the staff it appears. The negatives and only reason I'm not 100% happy to keep him 1 - 28yrs old isn't a big deal but he's an older breakout. 2 - He was an RP, meaning will he have the stamina to pitch 200 inns? 3 - had a very high strand rate...left a lot on the bases. (lucky) 4 - Pretty well unproven in a full season. |
Bumgarner by a lot for me, and i love Medlen.
Bumgarner Medlen weaver |
i don't think medlen will give you 200 innings.
i do think his ratio will be elite. as an under-sized RH pitcher, i think he will always be an injury risk. i think that risk is mitigated by his repertoire; four pitches which rely and accuracy and movement. his plus plus change. no slider. he has one of MLB's best bullpens working behind him, which helps explain the elevated strand rate, and give confidence in predicting plus wins. he is a risk, but less risky in some ways than weaver or bummer. i am really concerned about bummer's elbow. the september loss of velocity and control, coupled with the high % of sliders he throws, i see a red flag. hopefully nothing. over the last few seasons, weaver has shown a marked decline in his peripherals. 2012 K/9 a career low. three year upswing in siera, peaking at 4.02. babip, .241 in 2012, suggests his <3 era was somewhat lucky. critical #; he's lost 2 mph off all his FB's. every spring, he explains that the elbow soreness he experiences, is 'normal'. taken all together, i think this is a good time to stand pat. |

2 for bummy and one for Medlen...I'm no closer to a decision:(
Others I could target: scherzer, latos, greinke, sale, Gonzalez, wainwright, cueto, Halladay. |

Wainwright Greinke Medlen Sale I like Medlen, but i take Bumgarner/Wainwright/Greinke in a second for him. |

I read an article last year about how the slider is the hardest pitch on the elbow and leads to the most TJ surgeries.
