Gaborik Trade

I am in a deep 20 team Yahoo keeper league. Points format, not Head to Head.

Been offered the following,

I GET:
RW - V.Taresenko (STL) (really like this kid)
RW - D.Brunner (DET) (has been golden with Zetterberg in Swiss league)
1st rd pick

I MOVE:
RW - M.Gaborik (NYR)
7th rd pick

the 1st rd. pick is very intreguing as this owner doesn't have a power house team on paper, and that pick could turn into McKinnon or Seth Jones, since our league is so deep and we protect atleast 10 players each. Usually 1st rd picks go towards top prospects.

As for Gaborik I feel he is slowley declining (injury concerns) especially with big Dog Nash aboard. Maybe Gaborik is worth more?

Thoughts on the deal,

You're giving away the best player in this deal for 2 unproven players. I don't fell this is a good return for you.

Not discrediting Tarasenko here, but for a points only league I still think Gaborik carries significantly more value. Injury risk is a stigma that has followed Gabby around for a lot of his NHL career, but he played 82 games last season. Not sure I agree Gaborik is "slowly declining" either, as he did score 41 goals last season.

There are legitimately, maybe 3 to 5 players in the entire league you can say "that guy could score 40 goals every year" and Gaborik is one of them.

You're really considering trading him for two players who have yet to play an NHL game and a draft pick? I think you're undervaluing Gaborik's worth if you made this deal.

It depends on where your team is in it's development. If you are rebuilding and looking to re-stock then this is probably a great deal for you. On the other hand, if you are going for it this year it doesn't make sense.

even if you are rebuilding you should be getting more for gaborik

Thats just it, I joined this league (took a team over) 4-5 years ago and its taking a long process to build it up. (it was a horrible team) I made a similar deal for Eberle 2-3 years ago and look at how that has turned out. I think one thing I need to make sure before I go this route, is if our league is going to increase the size of our keepers. from 10 say to 15,

MY ROSTER:
C - P.Datsyuk (C/LW) M.Duchene (C/LW) S.Gagner (C/RW)
LW - Z.Parise (LW), J.Lupul (LW/RW)
RW - J.Eberle (RW), M.Gaborik (RW)
W - D.Penner (LW), T.Brouwer (RW)
F - C.Kreider (C), G.Nyquist (C), M.Paajarvi (LW)
D - A.Pietrangelo, N.Kronwall, K.Timonen, J.Petry, MA.Vlasic, J.Ericsson
G - J.Howard, D.Dubnyk, N.Khabibulin
BN - T.Tatar (C), T.Hartikanen (C), T.Barrie (D), B.Gromley (D)

I now how you feel, if you own Gaborik like I did - twice, you want to trade him exactly now. Coming off very good year, big hype with Nash in town. You and I now that it's only a matter of time before he gets seriously hurt again.

With that said you should be getting a much better return for him now.

I traded him with A. MacDonald for Ryan Getzlaf.

If you like Tarasenko, thats fine, but you need another good proven player to go along with him.

Good luck

what was the deal you made for eberle

MarmotKing 01-10-2013 10:08 AM

You should add your league info and team in your signature. It would make it easier for everyone to anwser your questions going forward :)

I totally agree. The GM who wants Gab should ADD a proven commodity. You're getting a ton of upside, which is great, but you should have insurance for Gab's irrefutable production. When healthy, he's very ELITE. And in a shortened season like this, he's healthy. If this guy can also send a 70pt player, I'd pull the trigger.
