according to chesnokov sovsport is reporting that ovechkin left early for washington because he is nursing an injury

The only "injury" he's "nursing" right now goes by the name of Kirilenko :D

I have not seen any other reports to corroborate this.

After reading this... I decided to start some "conspiracy theory" that Ovechkin is claiming the injury to avoid the Russian pressure of bailing out of the country prior to their KHL All-Star game (Sunday, Jan 13th).

If he's injured, he wouldn't play in the KHL All-Star game.
Fans can't hate on him for not playing if he's injured.
And if he's not playing in that game... he might as well return to Washington.

I definitely could see that being part of the reason. He already has all the Single Russian woman mad at him for being engaged it would be a full out riot if all the hockey fans knew he could have been at the all star game and chose not to participate ;)
