Thats a lot of money tied at up 3rd base.

at this point i think they assume a-rod is a DH. Youk can also play first to give Tex some time off. there was talk of trading Arod during the post season, but that just about turned into nothing. The reality is that he has a contract they would need to pay another team to take (either give up a few prospects or eat 10-15 mil a season).

This move just seems really odd since youklis and arod both have similar upside this season. Assumeing Arod can stay about where he was last season, we are looking at a 275/350 guy with above average speed, and power. any rebound from youlk puts him at .260/350 with above average power and slighly below average speed (not a detriment on the bases, but never wills steal). The only thing i can think of is that the yankees assume they are only getting 400 ab from each since both are older and getting injury prone.
