{ Trade} James Shields / Wade Davis
James Shields and Wade Davis traded to Royals. The Rays will get top prospect Will Myers and other prospects in return.

Giving up Shields and Davis for Myers and Odorizzi? Montgomery is a bust and Leonard is kind of an unknown. Feels like the Rays gave up a little bit too much proven talent in this one.
|
Personally I think this is a solid trade for both teams. Montgomery struggled the past couple years on his way to the bigs, but to say he is a bust may still be a bit too early to determine. Maybe this may be the move he needs to get back on track. Myers will replace Upton nicely. Ordonozzi is a nice piece too.

This will be one of those trades that will all depend on how Myers turns out.
For now, KC gets the proven. Long-term... who knows. Could be a Doyle Alexander-for-John Smoltz or Larry Andersen-for-Jeff Bagwell type of trade some day... TB has a hole with BJ Upton signing with ATL. And they have a strong staff. And they like to operate on a low payroll. Seems like a smart trade for both teams. |
Classic Rays move right here. Heard something along these lines rumoured for a while now, good to see them finally pull the trigger and move some of their exorbitant pitching depth for a bat.
|
Good trade for both teams, Davis should get a chance to shine in Kansas City. Shields is a workhorse and a veteran ace, which the Royals have needed for some time.
Myers is pretty much a lock to start with the Rays now and many believe he is MLB ready. Odorizzi will get a chance to secure a job in the Rays rotation, but he'll have to battle with Chris Archer for that spot. |
Good article from a baseball writer and Royals fan who thinks this was a terrible deal.

From the Royals perspective, it was either give up two prospects or give up Billy Butler.

Myers was a catcher earlier on, TB really needs a C... Maybe he can play a little bit of both OF and C. Perhaps even slot in at 1B or DH sometimes.
