other options are

gaborik and del zotto

peter mueller and del zotto - this one either without the pick or without carlson

I would be inclined to keep Staal.

If you can get Stepan, Ladd and Carlson for Mueller and MDZ then that would be an absolute steal in my books.

Now here's the thing. If Mueller stays injury free and produces at the potential he is capable of then you may be kicking yourself.

Either way though, I think that would be your best option.

Looks to me like you would be getting Staal and del zotto and giving up Stepan/Ladd/Carlson/pick.

In this case, I would not take Gaborik or Mueller and del zotto for that package.

Staal and del zotto is much closer:
Staal is the best player in the deal, and is one of the best faceoff men in the league, which gives him a boost in your league. He is also a goal scorer, prominent on the powerplay and an improved Carolina's go to in most situations. Del Zotto is also a contributor across the board.

It's hard to say where Stepan will end up, but he looks promising and could approach the production of Staal, all be it a few years down the road. Carlson is similar to Del Zotto and it is hard to say who will end up being the better contributor. Del Zotto has less competition but on a less offensive minded team if that means anything. Ladd is a solid all round contributor, a good depth play, but more easily replaced.
What might the 1st round pick be?

It's a close trade. I would lean toward taking Staal and Del Zotto as you get the best player in the deal (as of now, might be Stepan 2-3 years down the road) and Ladd can be replaced. I would like this deal better without the 1st invovled. Maybe drop it to a 2nd? Although, your league is quite deep. You might have to take a hit with a FA instead of Ladd, so you might be better off with the depth you have.

Avoid moving Staal.

If you can make the Mueller trade, especially considering his injury history, then by all means, jump all over it.

If you can manage to get Staal and MDZ for that package, you definitely should.

Just random comment, not to be a dick but no chance is Stepan ever going to be on Staals level. He will be a solid 55-70, but never PPG. He just doesn't have the skill set, more of a 2 way player. If you're getting STaal side take it, otherwise make it Mueller and MDZ and drop Carlson. Keep the pick.
