2012 draft - Rielly/Murray/Dumba

Same stats as leagues in sig.

Picking 3rd overall and targeting D.

I would rank them in the order of the thread title, but who would you take? Rielly likely has the highest upside, but the buzz around the other two is enough to take note of. Probably a similar arrival time for all 3 as well (within 2 years). I am leaning Rielly but Murray is intriguing - with JD signing on in Clb, are they finally worth taking note of?

I actually like Dumba here despite the fact that he plays an incomplete game. One of his NHL comparables, PK Subban, is not close to being a finished product yet is one of the top players to own in leagues with a lot of categories.

For fantasy purposes, this is my order.

Rielly- Huge upside if he pans out.
Dumba- I call him the mini-Phaneuf.
Murray- The rock on the back end, but lacks the upside of Dumba and Murray.

I like Murray because in CLB he'll get a long look... With that said JJ and Wissy are both signed for a long term, so it might take a lot for Murray to beat out those 2 for the #1 PP QB slot.

Dumba probably faces the least competition he has Suter but after him there isn't much competition besides Gilbert, Spurgeon and Brodin, but as Eric said, he's more of a project so I don't know if he has the offensive upside as the others.

Rielly from what I've read about looks to have a ton of upside, but the Leafs are always hard to work out or they might go out and splurge and pick up a high priced blue-liner... It wouldn't surprise me all that much if they went after a Streit, Edler or Visnovsky in the off-season, which will hurt Rielly's fantasy value down the track. Phaneuf, Liles, Gardiner, Holzer and Blacker, there's a lot of youngsters with upside there as competition too.

Could you not go after Schultz instead?

I had 7th pick in a prospect draft (2012 draftees) earlier this summer, and chose Dumba over Rielly, pretty much for the reasons Eric mentioned. Rielly was selected 9th.

But having seen Rielly and Dumba (Murray too) in person at the Vancouver Subway series game a few days back, I'm not so sure I made the right call. Rielly was just on another level, offensively at least.

As much as I usually prefer multi-cat guys, it's pretty hard to pass up a D-man who can rack up goals/assists/shots like a forward, which is what Rielly could be if he fulfills his potential.

Maybe flip a coin and at least you can't blame yourself if it all goes wrong?

I know you mentioned targeting D, but with 3rd pick I would have a hard time passing on Grigorenko.

@Maaaasquito - its 2012 draftees only, Schultz is already owned

@jsuites - I am pretty stacked on F, and am weak on D

Thanks for the input everyone - looks like its a Rielly-Dumba split. As Maaasquito said, the Leafs are hard to figure out and I usually stay away from them, but Rielly's potential is very hard to ignore. Dumba, if he comes as advertised should be the #2 guy before long on a much improved Minny team.

Maybe its a coin flip like jsuites said

This is my answer, said better than I would.

Upside and a what should be a strong supporting cast = Rielly.

DerekReese 11-18-2012 11:14 PM

I would rank them as:
Reilly
Dumba
Murray
