Stanley Cup no matter what?
If there is a canceled season, I hope we still get to see the cup awarded!

It didn't happen in 2005, so I doubt it happens now should the season be canceled.

I think this article is a little more realistic about the chances of the Stanley Cup being awarded to a team from outside the NHL:
http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl...6654--nhl.html To sum it up: 1. The trustees control the Cup, not the NHL. 2. The trustees MAY (not MUST) award the Cup to a different team should the NHL season be cancelled. 3. The trustees MAY decide to award it to no one if the NHL season is cancelled just as they did in 2004. 4. The trustees (Ian (Scotty) Morrison and Brian O'Neill) are former NHL vice-presidents and are on record as saying "don't hold your breath" and "it's simply not going to happen". From a motivation perspective it would be amazing if the trustees threatened to award the Stanley Cup to another team but there's no chance it actually happens. |
i love to see a beer league team get it.lol.
interesting stuff. i always assumed it was owned by the nhl. |
In these cases the cup should be awarded to the fans!
We deserve it for staying true and loyal to hockey , especially the NHL. Then the cup could travel from coast to coast visiting as many communities as possible , people would be given the opportunity to see the cup for free. Or/and the fans could vote as to who/whom they feel the cup could be awarded , minor hockey team , beer/gentlemens league , etc. |
I think the fact that it settled out of court may be something interesting to note

Unless I'm mistaken, historically the cup was awarded to whoever wanted to compete for it. The rules started to change as teams trekked (literally) from up north to compete only to lose by 28-0 and such. They then made it more memorial cup style where the best teams of the various leagues could compete. The NHL later adopted it as their trophy. If the season is lost it would be very redeeming to see the best teams from all the professional leagues compete for it. True spirit of the trophy!

I say let the semi-pro womens league have a tournament for it. Sadly they need all the help and publicity etc. they can get. What a great boost that would be for womens hockey!
